The North York Moors have had a firm footing on the food map for quite some time now. The region is famous for heather honey, real ale, artisan cheese and bread, and lobster on the coast. Whether you’re hiking the hills, cycling along the bridleways, or perusing the towns and villages, the breadth of cafés, restaurants, pubs and tea rooms means you are never far from your next meal.
The frequently rainy climate and superb farmland bears sublime produce, and the farmers markets here are an excellent starting point to sample the best the moors have to offer. The markets at Malton, Hovingham, Saltburn, Stokesley and Helmsley in particular are renowned.
The local breweries and orchards keep the area well-stocked in craft beer, real ale and cider, and you can visit many of the microbreweries or take an ale trail tour where sampling is a must, of course.
You can’t go anywhere on the North York Moors without happening upon a tea room. Yorkshire folk take their tea and cake seriously and you’ll find a cosy establishment offering a good brew and a heavenly cake selection on almost every corner.
